It naturally came as shock, and I worried about the effect this might have on the girls. The prison officer took obvious pleasure in my discomfiture.
Despite the continuing stress and the emotional turmoil, I was determined to keep healthy and stay focused. I was now using the small kitchen on the wing during evening recreation. I started to buy my own food from my wages, especially pasta, tinned tuna and sardines. I exercised every day. At weekends, I ran round the prison’s synthetic football pitch.
It had been a long time to wait but, finally, almost a year after I had been granted leave to appeal, my appeal was due to be heard in London. On 28 November 1999, I collected two plastic bags from the wing office and packed my things. All night, I lay on the top of my bed waiting for the morning. When I heard my name called, I carried my bags along the wing. I passed the men with whom I now shared my life. Some wished me well; others just stared blankly. At reception my bags were searched and sealed. I left Wakefield prison with hope in my heart. I did not intend to return.
After an uncomfortable journey, the van pulled into the central courtyard of Pentonville prison in North London. I was informed by a governor there that, because of the public interest in my case, I was to be kept in solitary confinement. The logic of this escaped me, but I did not care. I was permitted nothing at all in my cell, but I did not care about that either. I dreamt of holding my daughters again.
By 11:00 that night, the segregation unit was quiet, although I could still hear the occasional scream and one man crying. I was full of optimism, confidence and excitement. I prayed to God that my suffering would end.
